Philosophy

In English Language Arts, students will refine and build upon the following Common Core ELA skill areas: reading, writing, language, speaking, and listening fundamentals with increasing range, complexity, and independence in all areas.  Students will read, analyze, compare, and contrast literary and informational texts, examining the relationships among ideas, structure, and occasion.  Writing will include argumentative, informative, narrative, and research modes, with a focus on development, organization, style, purpose, and audience.

Speaking and listening skills will be taught through a wide range of collaborative discussion and presentation methods, and students will learn to build on others' ideas and to express their own clearly.  Students will learn to use media and technology to present and clarify information.  Vocabulary and conventions of standard English grammar and usage will be instructed and reinforced in conjunction with all areas of the curriculum.
